IGNORE YOUR GPS!  GO TO BARKLEY EAST THEN TO RHODES. This is what we recommend unless you are an adventoruos 4x4 driver

Fill up in Barkly East - there is no fuel in Rhodes or Tiffindell.  

The SA National Heritage Site of Rhodes is 67km from Barkly East on the 396 dirt road (allow 1 hour). Tiffindell is 22 km from the Rhodes via the Carlisleshoek pass, one of the famous 8 passes (the most famous one - allow 1 hour for this adventurous drive).

  • Johannesburg 790km (+/- 9hrs)
  • Cape Town 1177km (+/- 13hrs)
  • Port Elizabeth 642km (+/- 7.5hrs)
  • Durban 650km (+/- 7.5hrs)
  • East London 521km (+/- 6hrs)
  • Bloemfontein 419km (+/- 4.5hrs)

FROM CAPE TOWN - 1177km (13hrs)

Head for Aliwal North, via Colesburg, Venterstad and Burgersdorp. Then follow directions as from Aliwal North.

FROM JOHANNESBURG - 790km (9hrs)

Follow the N1 through Bloemfontein to the southern outskirts of Bloem passing "The Windmill" - then take the "Friendly N6" turn-off.

FROM BLOEMFONTEIN - take the N6 turnoff to Aliwal North then right at Church Street onto the "Friendly N6". Very good road surface Follow the signs to Aliwal North through Reddersburg, Smithfield, and Rouxville (drop to 60km/h and stop at stop signs- you are not in the Jhb anymore).  On entering Aliwal cross the Orange River (use your imagination and it is orange. There are Steers,Debonairs, Something Fishy and Wimpy all just over the bridge) turn right at the first robots. Travel along the main road and turn left onto the R58 towards Lady Grey/Barkly East.

FROM ALIWAL NORTH TO BARKLY EAST (110 kms, allow 2 hours). Drive past Lady Grey on R58.  This is a nice drive and good road surface taking you throught the Kraai River Pass over the Witteberge mountain range.

Arrive in Barkly East. Petrol to the right at first stop sign. NOTE PETROL STATION CLOSED FROM 10PM - 6AM

BEWARE: before getting to Barkly East you will pass 2 turn-offs (at 22km and 7 kms before Barkly) saying 'Tiffindell via Wartrail'. These routes are not recommended nor supported by Tiffindell. Currently the road is in a bad condition (4X4's ONLY!). Your GPS may also direct you this way. If you are a 4x4 enthusiast then please advise us if you want to take this route. However, if the Wartrail farmers or Tiffindell need to rescue/ recover your vehicle then you will be charged for it. There is no cell phone coverage in this area.

There are many lovely guest houses in the Wartrail area. Please make use of them, if stopping over, then take the Mosheshe's Ford/ Rhodes route to Tiffindell

FROM DURBAN - 650km (7.5hrs)
Go to Kokstad via Port Shepstone and follow the route through Matielle, Mount Fletcher, Maclear, Ugie, Elliot, Barkly East , Rhodes. Watch out for children, animals and potholes when travelling through the old Transkei. Naudes Nek Pass is mostly unpassable in winter! Pls check with reliable sources! 

FROM PORT ELIZABETH - 642kms (7.5hrs) Head to Barkly East via Grahamstown, Fort Beaufort, Seymour, Whittlesea, Queenstown, Dordrecht, Indwe, Elliot, and then on to Barkly East.

FROM EAST LONDON - 521kms (6hrs) From East London travel via Stutterheim and Cathcart to get to Queenstown and then follow instructions as from Port Elizabeth. It is shorter via the Transkei (N2>Nqamakwe>Tsomo>Engcobo>Elliot>Barkly)

ELLIOT TO BARKLY EAST (40 mins 62kms) this is over the spectacular Barkly Pass the highest sealed pass in SA. Also renowned for the 2013 discovery of the largest species of Dinosaur ever discovered. It is 1 of the famous 8 passes in this area.

Getting close ...

BARKLY EAST TO RHODES (1 hour & 60kms on dirt road). Phone (045) 974 9004/5 and ask about road conditions and shuttle availability.  If you did not book a shuttle and now want one, there will be  time delays in Rhodes. After fuelling up follow the signs to Rhodes on the R396, right after the Barkly East Bottle Store, over a bridge, onto dirt road with cemetery on the left. You are now in the Southern Drakensburg Mountains and will pass the only live volcano left in SA at Pete Steyns farm. There is intermittent cell coverage on this route.

(Be Careful! Do not head towards Aliwal and take any Tiffindell via New England/Wartrail turn-offs. (Even if GPS says this)

IN RHODES: There is a SHUTTLE SERVICE which offers transport from Rhodes to Tiffindell for guests or day visitors.  If you are booked for shuttling then your vehicles may be left in Rhodes at one of 2 PICK UP POINTS, Walkerbouts Inn (good Pizza's) or Rubicon (excellent burgers)-follow local signs. Uncovered parking. The shuttle is to be booked with the resort at least a week before your arrival date. Good cell coverage. Tel: (045) 974 9004/5

FROM RHODES TO TIFFINDELL: (1hour and 22kms). This is a dirt road up the steep Carlisleshoek pass, 4th highest pass in SA, and quite an adventure. Good in summer (unless big rainstorms) but it may be icy or covered in snow in winter (that's what you're here for). Access is possible in a high clearance 2x4 in good road conditions only. It is recommended that you always phone the resort(045) 974 9004 to confirm current road conditions as these can change rapidly (there is intermittent cell coverage on this route).
